George L. Frederick, general manager for Vaisala Wind Profilers in Boulder, Colo., has won the 2003 Charles Franklin Brooks Award by the American Meteorological Society, the nation's leading professional society for scientists in the atmospheric and related sciences.
The award, for “outstanding service as president and leadership in promoting economic growth across all sectors of the Society,” will be presented on February 12, at the AMS 83rd Annual Meeting in Long Beach, Calif. The Brooks Award is presented to an individual who has made important contributions to the Society, usually over a period of years. The award is named for Charles Franklin Brooks, who founded the AMS.
Frederick began his career in meteorology as a weather office in the U.S. Air Force, after graduating from the Air Force Academy with a degree in engineering science. He retired as the Commander of the Air Weather Service after 30 years in the Air Force. During his military career, Frederick planned for the use of unmanned aerial vehicles for weather reconnaissance, developed the roadmap for modernization of the Air Weather Service, and directed planning for weather support for B-2 bombers. Frederick has earned numerous awards for his work including a Bronze Star and U.S. Air Force Legion of Merit.
Among his many roles within the AMS and other scientific organizations, Frederick served as AMS president, is an AMS fellow and has served on the AMS Council and Executive Committee. He first joined the AMS in 1968. Frederick earned his master’s degree in meteorology at the University of Wisconsin. He was born in Sandusky Michigan and is married to the former Sharon Reinelt of Argyle Michigan. They have two sons, a daughter and three grandchildren.
The AMS, founded in 1919, publishes nine well-respected scientific journals, sponsors scientific conferences, and supports public education programs across the country.
